Portfolio

Building a great enterprise software user experience requires a combination of technical aptitude, software design skills and business acumen.  This process is as much about understanding technical product capabilities as it is about understanding customer needs and the business environment.  This portfolio shares a few of my favorite design methodologies that I have used to deliver innovative solutions and great user experiences.

Usability Assessments

The goal of usability assessments is to find and fix the most frustrating user experiences in a software offering. I measure the experience using multiple methods, then triangulate the data into an informative data-set that  enables the business to make strategic decisions and inform the development team of assessment details.

Usability Quadrant

Great for way to present the state of UX for General Managers.  From this chart it is easy to see which usability issues is causing the most frustration.

Experience Life Cycle

Understanding where the most frequent user experience pain points happen throughout the life cycle of the product helps tell the story of how user pain and frustration can be amplified during particular phases of  the product use.

Design Studios

Designing solutions follows a strong understanding of critical use cases, personas and  stakeholder goals. When running design studios it is helpful to brainstorm ideas that are framed in lessons learned during research activities. The main output of a design studio is a prototype that can be validated with customers in an iterative process.

Design Studio artifact

This was is the design that came out of a design studio held in India as part of a design workshop.  The gaol was to come up with a design that would help users manage API's based on the projects supported.

Validation

Early validation of new designs and product features are critical to the success of a product. Collecting early feedback helps validate designs and  assumptions made during the design process. Depending on the fidelity of the design, some form of usability testing typically works best.  AB testing, unmoderated and moderated testing are the most common.

Competitive Analysis

This competitive usability study explored the first time user experience with a focus the experiences that illuminated the products value proposition.

Testing with 5 users

In an effort to get more people onboard with usability testing I put together this slide explaining how many usability issues can be uncovered without running a lengthy study.

Evangelizing User Experience

Harnessing the power of user centered design requires a commitment from the development team. I've utilized a number of engaging and educational programs to increase understanding of the value of user centered design, including the following:

  • User experience lunch and learns

  • Usability games to be played at trade shows

  • User experience meet and greets

  • Weekly design review meetings

UX Day

This was a great event that brought people together to talk about UX and how it affects their everyday life.  This event was  full of ice breaking conversations about UX in the Enterprise Software space.

Fun Stuff

I am an avid cyclist and designed a cool bike stand that works in numerous environments, including staging for a race and cleaning after a muddy ride. I had a blast getting this off the ground, starting with a KickStarter campaign followed by a limited production run.   You can find more information at www.swaggerbikestands.com.
